The main purpose of extraction arms is to eliminate industrial pollutants at their source before they can reach the respiratory tract of workers. Pollutants are then conveyed to the main centralized system, which can be equipped with filters; on the contrary the suction arm is not equipped with filtrating media.
The filtering machine, equipped with extraction arm, sucks the pollutants at the source thanks to the hood installed on the arm and filters them thanks to the filtering media (choosen each time for the specific application). Finally the purified air can be rejected outside or rejected in the working place.
Another difference among the two products is that the suction arm is normally installed in a fixed position (on the wall or on a stand and then it can be moved thanks to the rotating base and the joints); the filtering machine can be fixed or portable so that it can be used on multiple workstations.

Usually a complete extraction arm (hanging version) includes: wall bracket, fitting and counterflange (when necessary), arm body and rotating basement, hood (this last product is different as per suction arm series).
On standing version, suction arms are equipped only with arm body, rotating base and hood (no wall bracket, fitting and counterflange are included unless required).
The air damper nedeed to regulate the air flow, the grid and the lightening kit are optional accessories.
The Atex directive divides companies in which there are potentially explosive atmospheres in two groups (Group I for Mining Industries – Group II for surface industries).
Within Group II for surface industries, the risk of explosion is categorized with three risk orders:
Category 1 Constant danger, permanent presence of explosive gases or combustible dust
Category 2 Potential hazard, occasional presence of explosive gases or combustible dust during normal operation
Category 3 Minor danger, presence of explosive gases or combustible dust not very probable or for short moments
For each category explosive gas and dust atmospheres are distinguished.
As regards surface industries, the categorization is as follows:
Category 1 Constant danger, high risk of explosion
- Zone 0 gas – II 1 G
- Zone 20 powders – II 1 D
Category 2 Potential hazard, potentially explosive atmospheres
- Zone 1 gas – II 2 G
- Zone 21 powders – II 2 D
Category 3 Minor danger, low risk of explosiveness
- Zone 2 gas – II 3 G
- Zone 22 powders – II 3 D
Airbravo (TM) products comply with the following categorization: Atex 2014/34 / UE Group II Category 2 Zone 1 and 21 Gas and Dust and Category 3 Zone 2 and 22
